Solved WWW No 152 - Neg no. 25835. Unidentified loco shed and 2-6-0.
The engine shed is at Builth Road and was situated on the Low Level (Mid Wales Railway) line from Brecon to Llanidloes. At Builth Road the Low Level line was crossed by the Central Wales line from Swansea Victoria – Shrewsbury via Sugar Loaf (and Llandrindod Wells). A photograph of this engine shed is in ‘Steam in Mid Wales’ by Michael Hale, published by Welsh Railways Research Circle, plate 48. The caption reads, ‘The small LNWR engine shed near the western end of the connecting loop at one time housed a locomotive out stationed from Shrewsbury, which was used for local shunting and station duties at Llandrindod Wells. In later years it was used by a Mid Wales line engine from Brecon shed’. There was also a turntable. A timber merchant now uses the whole area but I am told you can pick out where the turntable pit was.
This photograph by W.A. Camwell, possibly dates from 1962, the final year of service on the Mid Wales line. In the spring of that year all locomotives on the route were in a very presentable condition but once closure was proposed they all very quickly acquired a coating of grime to look like the unkempt specimen depicted, Class 2MT 2-6-0.
