Answer to 160 - Page 148, May/June 2012 ‘Journal’, Negative No. 19336 since renumbered as 19424.
The photograph shows a Cheshire Lines Committee home and distant signal and a four-car (not two two-cars) DMU with the head code 1H01. There is possibly a second set at the back of the four-car set but this is not clear. It has been suggested that a few four-car DMUs, similar to the St. Pancreas – Bedford units, were built for the Manchester to Liverpool expresses that ran on the CLC line and detail of the DMU classes would be welcome please.
The train seen in the picture is a Liverpool - Warrington - Manchester train emerging from a tunnel. The consensus location is near Aigburth (formerly Mersey Road) . R. Hewitt took the photograph on 15 June 1962.
Thanks to Malcolm Dickin, John New, Alan C. Patterson and C.E. Steelen and on-line correspondents for supplying information.
Addenda - Page 148, May/June 2012 ‘Journal’, Negative No.19336 since renumbered as 19424. Answer published on p.185 of July/August ‘Journal’. The photograph showed a DMU.
Malcolm Paul has advised that the photograph shows two 4-car Class 115 units not Class 127 St.Pancras-Bedford 4-car units. The Class 127 units had two wipers on the front of the unit and the engine profile was different. These had Rolls-Royce engines with hydraulic transmission. The Class 115 units were built at Derby Works, with BUT (Leyland Albion) engines with mechanical transmission, for the BR Marylebone Outer-Suburban Services but six of the sets were allocated to the Liverpool area to work the Liverpool to Manchester (CLC) route. These initially worked in pairs as eight-car sets on the hourly express service between the two cities as shown in the picture. Class 115 used on the Liverpool - Manchester service see below:
