Answer to 169 – A SR Coach at Cambridge - page 283, November/December 2013 Journal, Negative RFR 46AA
Photographs in this series which exclude a locomotive always provide a challenge. The information available tells us that this is a Southern Railway, bogie Third Class coach No.1007. The coach body has a distinctive wood panelling in the style of the matchwood seen on Great Central ‘Barnham’ coaches. The photograph was taken by R.F. Roberts at Cambridge station in March 1938. The coach to the left appears to be a compartment third coach possibly also of SR origin whilst an LNER teak bodied 3rd is in the background.
Any advice as to why SR stock might be at Cambridge would be welcome. Might they be there due to an excursion to Newmarket races?
