SLS railtour with former Midland Railway 0-4-4T 58087; 28 June 1952.

The photograph shows Johnson 1P 0-4-4T 58087 on an SLS rail tour on 28 June 1952.  The locomotive class of 56 was introduced in 1881 with this locomotive being built in 1900 and withdrawn August 1955.  The rail tour covered former Midland Railway lines of the Derby District.  The SLS Journal, May 1952, page 121 announced: - Rail Tour by push and pull set from Derby.  Depart at 3.5 p.m. with Midland 0-4-4T travelling via Chellaston and Melbourne at Ashby, thence Burton and G.N.R. curve to Eggington Junction, the special will then proceed to Midland main line and branch off again to Chellaston and Castle Donnington to trent, thence back to Derby, Midland (due 6.40 p.m. ). Fare will be 8s 6d. and tickets can be obtained from Mr. D. Luscombe (see under 15th June for address).  Birmingham members can travel at special half-day fare of 5s. 6d. to Derby by the 1.20 p.m. from New Street, but these tickets must be obtained when tour tickets are applied for.  A Derby Shed visit will also be arranged after the tour.  An extensive report of the tour was published in the SLS Journal of September 1952, pages 240 and 241. The locomotive carries Reporting No. M888 on the buffer beam and a rectangular headboard which was used on several such tours at this time.  The photograph was taken by W.A. Additional information now received as below:

The photograph was taken during a scheduled 10 minute stop between 16.33 and 16.43 at Allsopp’s Siding, Burton-on-trent to take on water.  This length of line from Shobnall Junction to Stretton Junction was built by the London and North Western Railway to their Dallow Lane Wharf immediately adjacent to the trent and Mersey Canal on the western edge of Burton-on-trent.   The Derby Branch Lines Rail tour was organised by W.A. Camwell started at Derby (Midland) travelling via Melbourne, Worthington and Ashby and thence via the Leicester and Burton line to join the Derby to Tamworth line at Leicester Junction where it immediately turned west to join the Shobnall Branch at Wellington Street Junction and after a ¼ mile swung north onto the LNWR. Allsopp’s Malting Sidings which were a further ½ mile.  The train then proceeded to Egginton Junction and Derby Friargate before making its way, probably over the Stanton Junction (Great Northern) to Stanton Gate (Midland) connection, to trent before returning to Derby Midland after 19.00, in time for an evening bash around the loco shed!! 

58087 had been built by Dubs, Works Number 3911 in August 1900 and was originally Midland Railway 2624.  It was renumbered 1424 in October 1907 and 58087 in the week ending 3 December 1947.  It had first received a Belpaire boiler in March 1926 and the Vacuum Controlled Regulator (push-pull) equipment was fitted in January 1935.  Originally allocated to Swansea (Upper Bank) to work the Swansea to Brecon and Hereford service, it was transferred to Peterborough in 1928 and Leicester in 1935.  It stayed in the Leicester and Burton area until 1954 when it was briefly transferred to Nottingham before travelling to Plaistow for the Upminster to Romford and Grays service in July 1954.  It was withdrawn from Plaistow on 25 June 1955 and broken up at Derby in August 1955.  The Engine History Card from 1928 is preserved at Kew under AN7/46.  Additional information supplied by Gerry Nichols.
