Notwithstanding the detailed notes kept by the photographer - Eric Lomax - there are several pictures for which the location was not been recorded and the details for other photographs taken on the same date may not be relevant.  This photograph is one of these.

This picture shows LNER Class J33 0-6-0 9169 on an 'up' freight in East Edinburgh at Craigentinny-Joppa.  The houses in the background are still there with their flat roofs, but the pylon may have gone as it was part of the old Portobello power station.

Quite a lot about this engine, withdrawn in December 1938, appears in the RCTS publication, Locomotives of the L.N.E.R. - Part 5.  This is the last (with 9249 withdrawn the same month) of the LNER J33 Class.  No.9169 was transferred to St Margaret’s from Polmont and spent its last years there.  The photograph is dated 10 February 1936.

Given that the location has been identified as Joppa, Eric Lomax’s local station, one may speculate that he considered the location to be obvious and thus exclude this detail from his notes. Arising from the information received serval other photographs have been similarly identified.
