LNER Class D20 4-4-0 2014 light engine. Arising from discussions with customers at the recent Warley Model Railway Exhibition the consensus view is that the location is Scarborough although a distance from the station, near the locomotive depot where there were carriage sidings on the opposite side of the running lines.
In the background, left of centre, the buildings are a good match for the large Victorian or Edwardian houses of trinity Road. The allotment gardens have now gone to be replaced by more housing, but in the 1980s it was possible to have a clear view across to the railway from the ‘country’ end of the road.
Eric Lomax took the photograph but only recorded the date – 23 June 1936.
A further Eric Lomax picture and description is here.
Prints of Eric Lomax photographs can be ordered through the SLS Photograph Collection -
