A Stanier 2-cylinder 4MT 2-6-4T 42659 on a local passenger train.
Stanier class 4MT 2-6-4T 42659 approaches Ryecroft Junction with a two-coach stopping train from the Lichfield direction around 1960. Unusually, the two coaches are former LNER Gresley corridor stock. The south to east spur linking to the former MR Sutton Park line is in the background. Sutton Park and other stations along the Midland line closed to passengers on 18 January 1965.
This class of 208 locomotives, numbered 42425-42672 inclusive, was built between 1936 and 1943. No. 42659 was built in 1941 and withdrawn April 1963. This locomotive had variously been allocated to Monument Lane, Bletchley, Stoke and Bushbury sheds.
The photograph is from the W.A. Camwell negative collection. A print appears in The South Staffordshire Railway, Volume 1, by Bob Yate, published by The Oakwood Press in 2010. Curiously the picture is credited to R. Selvey.
Information supplied by Eric Steele and R. Wood is acknowledged with thanks.
