Mercedes Unimog with six skip wagons - Industrial land opposite Platform 1 at Fawdon, one of the stations with staggered platforms on the Airport branch of the Tyne & Wear Metro system, was used to store the thousands of tons of new ballast used in the relaying of the track between South Gosforth and Jesmond.  Stobart Rail track maintenance vehicles, such as this Mercedes Unimog with six skip wagons, ferried the waste ballast from the track lifting site to Fawdon and returned loaded with fresh bottom or top ballast as required.  Here, the first two vehicles in Works train 5 have been cleared of old ballast and have been refilled with new while the remaining four vehicles are waiting their turn to be unloaded and similarly loaded.  Further excavators, one of which is just visible on the extreme left, moved the ballast to and from huge heaps beyond the reach of the machines situated at the line side, which were used solely to unload spent ballast and load fresh into the skip wagons.  Another skip train with the motive power in the middle waits to the rear for the excavators’ attention.
